Google releases Android 15 Developer Preview 1

Today marks the start of the Android 15 journey, with Google launching the first developer preview. It was anticipated that Google would roll out the DP1 this week. And as expected, the Android 15 DP1 is finally here. As usual, there will be several developer previews and beta builds before the stable release later this year.

Google has dropped some phones from the eligibility list. Android 15 will be available for Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel Tablet, and Pixel Fold. Pixel 4a (5G), Pixel 5, and Pixel 5a are not eligible for the Android 15 update.

The Android 15 DP1 is available with build number AP31.240119.016. The build number is the same for all the models as usual. It comes with February 2024 Android security patch.

Google also shared the expected timeline aka roadmap of Android 15. According to the initial timeline, Android 15 testing will include two developer previews and four public beta builds.

The first developer preview is the early Android 15 build intended for developer use. It provides them with the opportunity to test their apps for compatibility with the new Android version and make any necessary adjustments. However, anyone with an eligible Pixel phone can install the update.

So if you own an Android 15 eligible phone, you can install the update manually using a couple of methods. One of the common and easy method is installing a factory image. If you want to test the new Android 15 Developer Preview, make sure you first backup all your data.
